Nelsoandra Cole, our dear friend, sister, daughter, mother, and grandmother was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) on March 13, 2023. She was more tired than usual and started bruising easily; this was during a time when she was having dental issues with swollen gums after having her wisdom teeth removed and the healing process was taking much longer than usual. After weeks of being tired and miserable, and several doctor's appointments, one doctor finally decided to run more tests and that is when she found out it was a possibility, she may have cancer.
After a visit to The University of Iowa Hospital, in Iowa City, Iowa in March 2023, the doctor's confirmed she did indeed have AML and it was severe. There was no time to waste, she had to report back to the hospital on March 16th which was only 3 days after finding out she had the disease to start Chemotherapy treatments. Nellie would spend 30 days undergoing treatment at the University of Iowa Hospital.
She remained in remission until early November when after receiving a bone biopsy, they seen a dark spot. Nellie relapsed on November 10th and was admitted back into the hospital for five days for another round of a high dosage chemo treatment. During this time is when the doctors found a matched out of the six of ten donors and immediately scheduled her for a bone marrow transplant. She was admitted December 29th into the University of Iowa hospitals and received her bone marrow transplant on January 4, 2024, seven days after receiving another dose of chemo treatment prior to the transplant. Nellie had to remain in the hospital for several weeks after the transplant with limited (only 3) visitors during this time before being released to go home on strict orders January 25th.
Although, Nelsoandra would love to be in the presence of her family and friends, it is just too soon, and we would not want to compromise her immune system. Therefore, we are asking for donations to help relieve some of the burden of medical bills, medical supplies, and everyday financial expenses that have built up since Nellie has been off work for the past 15+ months.
Nelsoandra, Synesha, Shatazia, Jaquai, her parents and family genuinely appreciate any donation you are willing to provide.
2 Corinthians 9:6-8
Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
Love,
Mattie K. Tillman
