Through the Gift of Education To Vulnerable Rohingya Children
Today, I am writing to you on behalf of thousands of Rohingya children who are currently living in Bangladesh refugee camps. These children and I share identical backgrounds, but currently very different futures. These children, and I, were forced to flee their country, Burma, due to ongoing civil war and ethnic military brutality. Some of these children have parents, but many do not because they were murdered during ethnically motivated military attacks on Rohingyas. Today, thousands of these Rohingya children do not have access to school due to a lack of funds and resources. The Bangladeshi government does not allow the Rohingya refugees to attend public school. Most of those children do not have a voice, do not see the beauty of who they are, and do not see any future without an education to fuel their hopes and dreams.
Today, I want to share a dream of mine to help give the blessing and hope of education to these children that have been given to me. I am a Rohingya from Burma who also once faced ethnic military brutality and was forced to leave the country at a young age. In Burma, the Rohingya are denied their basic rights such as education, citizenship, and so on. As such, as a child, I was unable to go to school in Burma and was forced to work. I was 13 when I was forced to leave my family and my country as a work slave. After surviving a series of life-threatening circumstances, I miraculously ended up in an Indonesian refugee camp with thousands of others. There was nothing I wanted more than an education, and hope for my future. In Indonesia, I was able to start homeschooling in the refugee camp provided by the UN and IOM. My education dream began to be realized! After 3 years of very hard work, in 2017, I was selected to be resettled in the United States, through Lutheran Services. The US gave me a new home, a new family, new friends, and a reaffirmed hope to begin a new life. I attended Mount Spokane High School, which changed my life and graduated in 2020. My hard work at Mount Spokane helped me be selected by the ACT Six organization to receive a full leadership scholarship at Whitworth University. In the fall of 2020, I started my higher education journey at Whitworth and now I am a senior pursuing an education degree to become a future educator. Becoming a public servant in the field of education will fulfill my dream to help give to others what I have received.
Since the first day I attended school here in the United States, I have desired to create a foundation focused on education for Rohingya children. The sole purpose is to help provide schooling for the Rohingya orphan children so that they can have a voice to speak towards their future. The lack of education leads to many children getting caught up by human traffickers, being sold to work forcefully, and suffering from depression and other mental health issues.
Today I am starting the first fruits of my dream by seeking to raise funds for education for Rohingya children. My plan specifically is to build a school building in the Bangladesh refugee camp. To build a school for Rohingya children, a school, such as the one shown in the pictures below can be built for ~$10,000 USD.
In May 2024, I am going to Bangladesh to spend 3 months in the refugee camp to specifically build the school. I have colleagues who plan to join me, I have already identified volunteer educators who live in the refugee camp, and I have contacts locally to work with the Bangladesh government and local suppliers to provide what I need. I will personally be involved in the construction.
What I do need is your financial support to help me build this school, and give the gift of education to these children, who otherwise will receive no education. My dearest family, friends, brothers, sisters, and community members, would you help me donate to my fundraiser and make my dream come true?
Please know that 100% of your dollar will be directly used to provide these children with education. As we all know, a basic education is the best weapon that humans can have and no one can take it away once you have it.
We all need help from each other and we do have amazing opportunities to give help to others, to give the voiceless a voice, and to give the hopeless hope. Together we create a better future for all. Your contribution will make a significant difference in those children’s lives and may God bless you and help you with bigger prizes in exchange
Will you please join me in this journey to help make a difference in those children?
Please consider joining me in this journey and may God bless you. Do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions you may have.
Thank you,
Sincerely,
Noor Kamal
