I am here in San Francisco, and I am safe. I sleep in a warm bed. My immediate family is not too far away. How lucky am I? Who would have thought that we were winning the lottery when my family immigrated to America? If my family had stayed in Odessa, I would now be one of 40 million people trying to escape and survive in this unthinkable war.

I cry every day watching families being separated. Grandparents who can’t join their kids are saying goodbye. I cry for husbands who are staying to fight and for wives and kids who might never see their husbands and dads. I cry because I can feel the unimaginable loss Ukraine is experiencing now.

I can’t watch and do nothing. My coach once told me I am strong because I am Ukrainian. He was right. If I were younger, I would go back to Ukraine and fight. Unfortunately, I am too old to enlist. I can help in other ways, though. For example, I can raise money for lodging for 2.5 million people who need a place to stay.
