Madison’s Cancer Journey
For those of you who do not know Madison was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer in September 2017. The cancer had already spread from the thyroid to the lymph nodes and lungs. She immediately had surgery to remove her thyroid as well as 25 additional tumors. She underwent 2 rounds of radioactive iodine treatment which is the treatment used for thyroid cancer. Even with surgery and 2 treatments Madison’s cancer persisted. The surgery was not able to remove all the cancer and the treatments were not successful.
Madison was sent to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston in 2019 due to the complex nature of her cancer. Over the years the doctors at MD Anderson have been monitoring the slow growth of the cancer that remains in her body.
At her appointment at MD Anderson in May 2024 Madison found out that her cancer's growth rate was increasing and had spread to other organs close to her heart. Madison requires another surgery to remove the cancer and due to the cancers proximity to the heart there is a possibility she might need full open-heart surgery. However, the doctors are hopeful that they will only need to remove a part of her sternum to reach the cancer. In her original surgery there was a complication that resulted in the nerve that operates the left side of her diaphragm being cut causing her to have difficulty breathing for the rest of her life. During this new surgery the surgeons will complete a procedure to improve her ability to breathe. Madison’s surgery is scheduled in July.
Madison also recently found out that she and Evan will require IVF to have a baby due to all the damage her body has sustained during her battle with cancer.
With all these new medical struggles Madison and Evan are faced with significant out of pocket medical expenses even with the assistance of health insurance. Madison’s surgery will be completed at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas. Madison and her family will also have to incur travel and lodging expenses during the time of her surgery and any necessary treatments. All funds raised will go exclusively toward medical bills, medication costs, and possible travel and lodging costs to and from Houston.
Madison is hopeful and is trusting in a God of miracles. Her hope is that through this journey she will be able to show others the faithfulness of God and be able to spread His message to all those who are battling disease. All the glory to God!
“When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.”
