Almost one month ago, Jorge began to complain of a headache and of generally not feeling well. He thought he just needed a good night's sleep after months of waking alongside Frankie to care for the baby. As days went by, Jorge's headache became worse and more consistent, as other symptoms also presented. Eventually he was experiencing fever, weakness throughout his body, total loss of appetite, immobilizing head pain, and back and leg pain from being bedridden. During the course of almost 3 weeks, he sought help at urgent care, the emergency room, and from his general practitioner before finally pinpointing the cause of the pain. After many blood tests, a lumbar puncture, and a head MRI, it was determined that Jorge had a subdural hematoma, or bleeding between his brain and skull, that would require surgery. He was admitted to the Intensive Care department of the hospital and scheduled for a double burr hole craniotomy the next day (Friday, August 1st). Prior to the surgery, his blood tests revealed low platelets and slowed clotting times. He was given plasma and vitamin K transfusions to improve his coagulation times and reduce the risk of further bleeding during surgery. The surgery was successful in relieving the pressure and pain in his head, but his blood factors continued to worsen. They determined he has something called DIC, Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, which has three main causes- infection, autoimmune disease, or cancer. During his recovery he began to notice new pain in his chest, so the doctors ordered a chest and abdominal scan. They discovered both swollen and calcified lymph nodes in the chest area, in particular around his bronchial tubes. They ordered a bronchial biopsy to determine whether what they were seeing was from an old infection or cancer, which would explain the DIC. While waiting for the scheduled biopsy, Jorge continued to have increased back and leg pain, greatly surpassing the pain in his head post-surgery. The doctors ordered a scan of his back, which devastatingly revealed metastatic disease (cancer) in his spinal tract. In order to confirm exactly which type of cancer Jorge is suffering from, the doctors took a bone marrow biopsy from his hip. Doctors stated he has either Lymphoma or Leukemia, but the bone marrow biopsy takes days to return. The doctors say this diagnosis explains all of his symptoms, including the brain bleed and the extreme back and leg pain. Most recently Jorge has begun to feel a new pain on the other side of his head, similar to the original pain from weeks before. With another head scan they have determined he is bleeding once again. They will be transferring him to Seattle for a procedure not offered in Bellingham. It will be an additional, but different procedure to stop the bleeding, involving placing a coil into the blood vessel. Once the results of the bone marrow biopsy are known, the hope is to start cancer treatment right away. Jorge is young, strong both physically and of will, and has much to fight for, most notably the newest addition to his family. He became a father 8 months ago, with the birth of his son, Jorge Agustín. Jorge is ready to face this cancer head on and give it his best fight. Between hospital and treatment costs, and the loss of his ability to work and provide, Jorge is worried about the incoming financial burden to his family. Hace casi un mes, Jorge empezó a quejarse del dolor de cabeza y malestar general. Pensó que sólo necesitaba dormir bien después de trasnochar cuidando al bebé. Con el paso de los días, el dolor de cabeza empeoró y se hizo más constante, y se presentaron otros síntomas más. En fin, experimentó fiebre, debilidad en todo el cuerpo, pérdida total de apetito, dolor de cabeza inmovilizador y dolor de espalda y piernas por estar tanto en cama. Durante casi tres semanas, buscó ayuda en la clínica de urgencias, en el hospital, y con su médico general antes de determinar la causa del dolor. Tras numerosos análisis de sangre, una punción lumbar y una resonancia magnética de cabeza, se determinó que Jorge tenía un hematoma subdural, o hemorragia entre el cerebro y el cráneo, que requeriría cirugía. Lo ingresaron a la unidad de cuidados intensivos del hospital y se programó una craneotomía de doble orificio para el día siguiente (viernes 1 de agosto). Antes de la cirugía, sus análisis de sangre revelaron un bajo recuento de plaquetas y una coagulación lenta. Le administraron transfusiones de plasma y vitamina K para mejorar sus tiempos de coagulación y reducir el riesgo de sangrado adicional durante la cirugía. La cirugía alivió la presión y el dolor de cabeza con éxito, pero sus parámetros sanguíneos siguieron empeorando. Determinaron que padece CID (coagulación intravascular diseminada), que tiene tres causas principales: infección, enfermedad autoinmune o cáncer. Durante su recuperación, comenzó a notar un nuevo dolor en el pecho, por lo que los médicos solicitaron una tomografía torácica y abdominal. Descubrieron ganglios linfáticos inflamados y calcificados en la zona torácica, en particular alrededor de los bronquios. Solicitaron una biopsia bronquial para determinar si lo que observaban se debía a una infección antigua o a un cáncer, lo que explicaría la CID. Mientras esperaba la biopsia programada, Jorge seguía teniendo un aumento del dolor de espalda y piernas, que superaba el dolor de cabeza posoperatorio. Los médicos solicitaron una tomografía de espalda, que reveló una enfermedad metastásica (cáncer) en el tracto de la columna vertebral. Para confirmar con exactitud el tipo de cáncer que padece Jorge, los médicos le realizaron una biopsia de médula ósea de la cadera. Los médicos indicaron que tiene linfoma o leucemia, pero la biopsia de médula ósea tarda unos días en obtener los resultados. Los médicos afirman que este diagnóstico explica todos sus síntomas, incluyendo la hemorragia cerebral y el intenso dolor de espalda y piernas. Recientemente, Jorge ha comenzado a sentir un nuevo dolor en el otro lado de la cabeza, similar al dolor inicial de semanas atrás. Con otra tomografía craneal, han determinado que está sangrando de nuevo. Lo trasladarán a Seattle para un procedimiento que no se ofrece en Bellingham. Será un procedimiento adicional, pero diferente, para detener la hemorragia, que consiste en la colocación de un espiral en el vaso sanguíneo. Una vez que se conozcan los resultados de la biopsia de médula ósea, se espera iniciar el tratamiento contra el cáncer de inmediato. Se convirtió en padre hace 8 meses con el nacimiento de su hijo, Jorge Agustín. Jorge está listo para enfrentar este cáncer y dar lo mejor de sí.
