Hello, this is Mary Olson. I am starting this page on behalf of my 45-year-old son, Jake Olson. Jake is a father to two beautiful girls, Lily and Amelia. He is facing a difficult road ahead, and his family will need a lot of support and prayers to get by during this time.
In April of 2022, Jake became ill and was diagnosed with aplastic anemia at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City. After a lengthy stay there, receiving blood and blood products and immunosuppressive treatment, he began feeling better and started a 2-year regimen of treatment with these drugs and periodic trips to St. Luke's for blood and blood products with hopes of a cure. Jake's energy improved and his labs were improving and he was able to return to work doing foundation repair. We were all very encouraged!
This April marked 2 years of the treatment regimen. In early May, Jake began having shortness of breath, weakness and fatigue, and constant headache and ringing in his ears. He returned to St. Luke's and underwent a bone marrow biopsy and was referred to the KU Cancer Center. KU proceeded with their own biopsy and confirmed that Jake's aplastic anemia had now evolved into leukemia, and that he needed to undergo a bone marrow transplant as soon as possible.
After completing a round of chemotherapy to destroy his existing bone marrow, Jake will be receiving his bone marrow transplant on July 10th from his brother Benny, who proved to be his closest family match.
After the transplant, Jake will require 24/7 care and be quarantined away from everyone, including his daughters, for 100 + days while his body tries to rebuild and recover.
The doctors project that Jake will be unable to return to his heavy physical job for at least 6 months (if all goes well), and this is why we are asking for your support. Anything you can contribute will directly help pay for bills, food, and living expenses for Jake and his family while he is undergoing his treatments and recovery.
Jake is a strong guy and a dedicated father. I know he will fight for his health and family, and ask that you consider aiding in that fight by contributing whatever you can toward our goal. Thank you for your support!
