Ethan's Story

I want to first start off by saying thank you to everyone that has reached out, sent gifts, sent prayers, or started a prayer chain. Like Eric said in a previous post, it's something you are never prepared to hear. As some may know, Ethan was taken to LRMC on Sunday last week for some symptoms that just would not go away: fatigue, bruising, poor appetite, pale complexion, decreased hearing after an ear infection, and then leg pain. (But due to our baseball season starting and being out late with Eric's games, we thought some of his fatigue was from that.) He was immediately sent to Nemours for evaluation. He has had what seems like 100 lab tests, X-rays, CT scans, an MRI, a bone marrow biopsy, and a lot of ruling things out. As all those tests came back negative but his labs did not improve, it became clearer what we were dealing with. They have diagnosed him with leukemia, specifically AML. He had a central line placed today and will start chemo Thursday. Because of the aggressive chemo regimen, we have to stay here 4 to 6 weeks, then he can come home possibly for 1 week. This treatment will last at least 6 months. His treatment may include a stem cell transplant, but that would be later. We have a very hard time controlling his pain in his leg along with difficulty hearing. We are in shock; 2 weeks ago we were at the baseball field and now he is in for the fight of his life. It saddens me to see this outgoing, goofy, sarcastic, easy-going kid have to go through this. Our hearts are torn as this is supposed to be a joyous time for graduation, parties, and all the end-of-the-year things, but we were hit with the worst news a parent can hear. Please continue to have Ethan and our family in your prayers. We love you all and again appreciate all the support. We will keep posted as much as possible on this journey, but he is a fighter and you all know how I operate; we will keep fighting.
