My sister, Estela Cruz, went to the emergency department and was hospitalized in May 2025. She was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease and chronic kidney disease, stage 5. Her glomerular filtration rate of her kidneys is currently only working at less than 15 ml/min.

An glomerular filtration rate of 15 ml/min or less indicates that the kidneys are barely functioning and are very close to, or have already reached, complete failure. At this point, the kidneys are no longer able to effectively filter waste products and excess fluid from the blood. As a result of impaired kidney function, waste products and toxins build up in the body, leading to various symptoms and health problems.

Individuals with end stage renal disease may experience a range of symptoms, including:

Fatigue and weakness.

Nausea and vomiting.

Swelling (edema) in the hands, feet, and ankles.

Changes in urine output (may be reduced or cease altogether).

Difficulty sleeping.

Muscle twitches and cramps.

Persistent itching.

Headaches.

Decreased mental sharpness or confusion.

Loss of appetite and weight loss.

Metallic taste in the mouth.

She is currently getting hemodialysis on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at an outpatient hemodialysis center. My sister is eligible for a 2-stage right brachiobasilic transposition arteriovenous fistula so she can continue to get hemodialysis. She is currently getting hemodialysis through a Central Venous Catheter, but that is not recommended for long-term use as there is a high risk of infection.

My sister does not have insurance at this time, and her family is working on applying for Medicaid. They have been told she does not qualify and are working with the hemodialysis social worker at the outpatient hemodialysis center to help get coverage for my sister. It is unknown at this time when my family will be able to get my sister qualified for Medicaid and/or Medicare. She is getting outpatient hemodialysis and going to her doctor appointments with no coverage. My sister and her family are already in a lot of medical debt due to not having insurance coverage. The doctors cannot complete the 2-stage right brachiobasilic transposition arteriovenous fistula unless there is a $5,000 upfront payment made as the cost for this procedure is $100,000. She is at very high risk of infection if she continues to get hemodialysis through her central venous catheter.

Her children have had to take time off work to drive her to her appointments as she is very weak. Her husband is the only person working at this time and his employer does not provide insurance coverage. They also have a minor son they care and provide for.

Any help would be appreciated as we are hoping to raise enough money to get her the $5,000 upfront payment needed for the 2-stage right brachiobasilic transposition arteriovenous fistula procedure. My sister is a wonderful mother, sister, daughter, and friend!
