My name is Emmanuel, and I am a Panamanian immigrant pursing U.S. citizenship living in Holland, Michigan. My parents came to the U.S. seeking a better life for their family in the late 80's, and since my legal entry into the U.S. I have been working hard every day to make that dream a reality as a permanent resident. I have faced the challenges of growing up in a different culture than that of my parents. It was a struggle to pursue higher education as the first one to do so in my family. I am proud of the fact I graduated college and was able to thrive as a teacher/coach for the past 16 years in Michigan. Building a life in the U.S. has been full of meaning and purpose both professionally and personally. I am able to offer my three children opportunities I did not have growing up. Citizenship is important to me so I can continue to provide the stability my family relies on indefinitely. It will allow me to fully participate as a voter in the country I love and call home, engage in my community more fully, and it will create a deeper sense of belonging within me. In the uncertain political atmosphere currently within the U.S. obtaining citizenship will bring peace of mind to my spouse Emily, our three children Sebastian 10, Ana 8, and Addie 5, as well as to my students and extended family. There are costs associated with this that are twofold. Legal fees for my lawyer in the amount of $1,100.00 and the filing fee to USCIS for the N-600 Naturalization application in the amount of $1,300.00. I have already started the process and paid $300.00 so my immigration lawyer can begin the 10-16 month arduous process. If you’re able to donate — even just a small amount — it would mean the world to me. And if you can’t give, sharing this campaign or keeping me in your thoughts and prayers is also deeply appreciated because this is not an obstacle free journey. Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I’m incredibly grateful for your support, and I’m hopeful for what lies ahead. With your help, I’ll be one step closer to becoming a U.S. citizen — something I’ve dreamed of for years and hope to celebrate with you in the future.
