Help Drew Give Rex the Life He Deserves – Fighting Osteosarcoma Together

Some souls are meant to find each other—and that’s exactly what happened when Drew met Rowdy Rex, a retired racing greyhound in Sarasota, Florida. At the time, Drew was facing one of the hardest chapters of his life. He had just started graduate school in Tampa, searching for purpose and stability. That’s when Rex came along—a quiet, unsure greyhound who didn’t yet know how to climb stairs or what a soft bed felt like- much less the purpose or fun of a toy.
They’ve been inseparable since day 1.

Rex quickly became more than just a pet. He is a steady companion, a reason to get out of bed, a quiet anchor in a storm. For over 7 years, Rex has followed Drew from Florida to Missouri—from sunshine to snowy sidewalks—always by his side, always trusting. Together, they’ve traveled the East Coast, bundled up for the Midwest winters neither of them had the wardrobe or genetics for (!) and together they have built a life defined by love and resilience.

Drew works tirelessly as a school psychologist, supporting the mental health of children in St. Louis’s public school system. He juggles a full-time job, helps families in crisis, and is still paying out of pocket to finish his advanced degree. Through it all, Rex has been his calm, his comfort, his couch buddy. Drew would never tell you- but the cost of remaining in school has severly dampened his ability to support Rex's care and treatments.
But now, Rex needs help.

In April 2024, Drew noticed something was wrong. After a few vet visits and a heartbreaking diagnosis, the fear became real: Rex has osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer. The pain in his leg grew unbearable, and though Drew hoped to raise funds before moving forward, he couldn’t stand to see Rex suffer. Rex recently underwent a leg amputation—his best shot at a longer, pain-free life.
And even now, recovering from surgery, Rex is still his cheerful, loyal self—hobbling like a “modern-day pogo stick,” visiting his favorite people at the vet’s office, and lighting up the corner gas station with his smile. The woman at the counter cried when she saw him again. She had been worried when he stopped visiting—proof that Rex touches hearts wherever he goes.

We want to help Drew continue to give Rex the life he deserves. The next step is chemotherapy—4 to 6 treatments that could give Rex many more happy days filled with peanut butter treats, car rides, and snuggles on the couch.
Every donation will go directly toward Rex’s medical expenses—his surgery, his chemo, and the continued care that this sweet, gentle soul needs.
If you’ve ever loved a dog, you know they’re more than pets. They’re family. And in Drew’s case, Rex is so much more. They saved each other once—and now, Drew just wants to return the favor.
Please consider donating if you’re able, and help us spread the word. Together, we can give Rex more time, more tail wags, and more love.

A note from Drew (Rex’s dad):
The outpouring of support has been incredibly moving. Rex isn’t just a dog—he’s my heart, my best friend, and my family. Thank you to everyone who has offered help, advice, or encouragement. And thank you to Jamie Banjak for organizing this fundraiser. I’ll keep sharing updates on Rex’s progress and adventures as we move through treatment together. If you’re part of the (reddit) greyhound community—you already know—we’re a weird bunch, but once a hound chooses you, they change your life forever.
