Mascogo Tacos is an innovative and tasty casual taco shop in Oakhurst, in the spot previously occupied by Tortuga y Chango and before that, Lawrence's Cafe. Owner and Chef Craig Headsbeth has worked the lively pop-up scene in Atlanta for years, selling out of his delicious taco creations at breweries, distilleries and festivals across town. He was ecstatic to find a brick and mortar location to set down roots. Unfortunately, due to extenuating circumstances around incorporating, permitting, licensing and other bureaucratic red tape, the business was never able to take off and thrive the way we, and the neighborhood had hoped.
Help us take care of the bartenders, servers and cooks who help serve our community while we here with you. Every penny you donate here goes to their back wages. THANK YOU!
Named for the rich history of the Mascogo people: escaped slaves fleeing from plantations in Georgia and South Carolina and finding refuge in Spanish-controlled Northern Florida. Former black slaves would be given land and assistance by the Seminole Tribe, including protection if necessary, in exchange for a form a tribute. As a black owned-taco business in Atlanta, Mascogo helps to bring these cultures together in a cuisine which itself becomes a modern mirror of the Atlanta food scene.
