A few days ago, my 4-year-old cat, Chimpkin, was diagnosed with diabetes. We were told he’d need further testing and insulin soon, but before we could begin treatment, he suddenly became extremely ill—weak, unresponsive, not eating, unable to walk. He was slipping into Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening complication that can develop quickly in diabetic cats.
By the time we got him to an emergency hospital, he was in critical condition. His blood sugar was dangerously high, his body and organs were shutting down, he lost half his body weight, and he was severely dehydrated. DKA causes the body to break down fat at an extreme rate, which floods the bloodstream with ketones, leading to acid buildup, organ failure, and death if left untreated.
He was immediately admitted to intensive care, where he stayed for several days on continuous IV fluids, insulin therapy, electrolyte support, and 24/7 monitoring. His condition was touch-and-go—at one point, we were told he might not make it through the day.
Miraculously, he survived. He is finally stable, but his recovery isn’t over. He now needs lifelong insulin, prescription food, regular blood glucose monitoring, and follow-up care to stay healthy.
His emergency ICU stay alone totaled nearly $9,000, and that doesn’t include his ongoing care needs. I’m doing everything I can to give him the best chance at a long, healthy life—but I can’t do it alone.
If you’re able to help in any way, we are so grateful. Every donation helps us cover the life-saving care he received and ensures we can keep managing his condition moving forward. Thank you so much for supporting us.
