Charles (Charley) Smith is known and beloved by us all - he and his family have had a challenging year and we are grateful for the highs and are grieving the lows. As of this spring, Charles will need further cancer treatment, as his condition has progressed, and this diagnosis comes with many more medical and life expenses. One tangible and incredibly helpful way we can serve the Smith family in this time is through fiscal generosity.

As many of you know, Charley was diagnosed with Stage 3 testicular cancer in September 2023. He underwent surgery to remove the cancer shortly after the diagnosis. During his recovery, Charley experienced shortness of breath and chest pain. Initially suspected to be a pulmonary embolism, it was discovered that he had three tumors in his lungs.

Charley began four rounds of chemotherapy on October 2, completing them on December 26. Following chemotherapy, his tumor markers returned to normal, and the lung tumors had shrunk by 40-50%. Praise God! However, during further review, a blood clot was found in the right atrium of his heart. Charley started on blood thinners at that time and has been careful to avoid high-risk activities.

Winter's challenges caused a delay in his three-month check-up, but by May 20, 2024, we received the unfortunate news that the lung tumors had started growing again, and his tumor markers were no longer within normal range. Further tests revealed that his tumor markers had increased by 11% in just 10 days, and a new tumor was found in the right frontal lobe of his brain on May 30.

We are devastated by this news. Charley, a 27-year-old with so much to look forward to, is facing a difficult battle. As we navigate this challenging time, we find solace and strength in our faith.

2 Kings 20:5 says, "I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you." We hold onto this promise and continue to pray for Charley's healing and strength.
