This Go-Fund-Me page is about my 15-year-old grandson Carter. He is the tall one in the photos. Carter has been diagnosed with a rare functioning pituitary macro adenoma that is pressing on and wrapping around the carotid artery and also pressing on his pituitary gland at the base of his brain. This journey began when Carter started growing at a phenomenal rate over the last 2 years. He is presently 6’7” in height. This tumor is constantly releasing growth hormones which is the reason he is growing so fast. It causes excessive sleeping and can create other more severe health concerns including reduced functioning of his pituitary gland, diabetes, blindness, and heart failure if not removed.

Carter is the second of four children of Ashley and my daughter Lorie Hales. He has two sisters, Daughtry who is graduating high school this year and will be entering college at UNCW in the fall and Bailey who will be starting the 8th grade in the fall. He also has a younger brother, Sawyer, who is about to be 9 years old in June. They reside in Wilmington, NC.

Carter’s surgery will take place in Houston Texas at Houston Methodist Neurological Institute with Dr David S. Baskin who is a master surgeon of pituitary tumors. Surgery is scheduled for June 24th. This will be a journey and we do believe God has brought us to this surgeon and he will not leave us during all that lies ahead.

The family is facing extraordinary expenses for travel, food, accommodations, loss of work and meeting the deductibles and out of pocket max from insurance. Initially there will be two trips to Texas, first to meet with the doctor and preop testing. The second a little over a week later for another CTA test and surgery. Carter will be in the hospital 2 to 3 days depending on his recovery and he will not be allowed to fly for 2 weeks due to elevated pressure and risks of a cerebrospinal fluid leak. There will also be return trips for follow up appointments.

As a Mimi, this is not something I ever thought about doing. Go Fund Me pages were never in my scope of things although I have helped others in this very way. It is my prayer that the family can put their efforts towards Carter’s care and healing without the worry of work until they can get him through recovery. This is my sweet boy and there is a great need here for the family. We appreciate your prayers because we do believe God hears from Heaven and he is our ROCK. So many prayers have already been answered. We appreciate any gifts you feel lead to give as we prepare for this journey, We look forward to a completely successful surgery. Giving God the Glory!
