Caity Shoffer is a 25-year-old Pickens County native who was recently accepted into Physical Therapy school to pursue her Doctorate in Physical Therapy when the unexpected and unimaginable happened — she was diagnosed with Stage 3C ovarian cancer.
Caity’s cancer is extremely rare for someone her age. She is among the small percentage of women between the ages of 24–34 diagnosed with this stage of ovarian cancer.
Since her diagnosis, she has undergone several treatments, procedures, and medication trials in hopes of controlling the numerous tumors in her abdomen and preventing the cancer from spreading further. Her team of doctors originally hoped to surgically remove the tumors, but due to their size, quantity, and location, her oncology team decided to begin chemotherapy first in an attempt to shrink them.
Unfortunately, Caity has experienced severe reactions to chemotherapy, resulting in several unexpected ER visits and lengthy hospital stays filled with intense medications and treatments, all while enduring the difficult side effects of chemo.
Her treatment timeline and plans have continued to change, requiring more travel, prolonged hospital stays for infusions and chemotherapy, and additional medication trials beyond what her medical team originally anticipated. She is now working with MD Anderson, Houston who specializes in cases like Caity’s, as well as exploring a possible clinical trial.
Caity’s road to beating this awful disease will be long and full of twists and turns, but one thing we know for certain is that she is a fighter. Due to the severity of her case, Caity is trying to keep working, but has not been able to. Because of this, her parents and family have had to take several days off work to help care for and support her through treatment.
Through it all, she has remained incredibly strong, positive, and determined to KICK CANCER’S ASS! The Shoffer family would never ask for help, but it is our turn to rally around them and provide any support possible during this incredibly challenging time.
Prayers, donations, and visits with Caity are just a few ways you can help.
