On October 14, 2019, Brooke Bartush Clements was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer.
One night before going to bed, Brooke noticed a strange lump in her left breast. With her husband Curt’s encouragement, Brooke contacted her doctor the next day who immediately ordered a diagnostic mammogram. After a biopsy and subsequent MRI, Brooke and Curt learned that she had Multifocal Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC) in her left breast. Not knowing whether there is one large mass or two separate masses, Brooke’s oncologist has suggested doing surgery first to determine whether she will ultimately need to undergo chemotherapy.
To treat this type of cancer is an expensive endeavor. First, Brooke has a high deductible health plan and will need to pay 100% of eligible expenses associated with surgery and treatment until she reaches the individual annual deductible amount of $4,500 and/or the out-of-pocket family maximum of $9,000 in 2019 and 2020. Second, the Clements are a single income household with Brooke as the primary earner. Undoubtedly, Brooke will need to miss work to give herself the best chance to fight breast cancer. While her prognosis looks positive, we expect her bills and out-of-pocket costs to exceed $10,000 in the next 6 months.
There are difficult days ahead, but Brooke and Curt have a strong, positive mindset and an incredible support network. They have agreed to allow us to organize a GoFundMe campaign on their behalf.
Brooke is a loving wife to Curt, a devoted mother to Lia (9) and Nathaniel (6), and an amazing friend to many. She has the best sense of humor and brings a smile to those she meets. She is always putting others first. We would like to put Brooke first by asking you to donate any amount to support the expensive costs of treatment. Let’s help Brooke and Curt focus on fighting cancer and not how they are going to pay for it. All funds raised will go directly toward her cancer treatment and related costs.
We’ll continue to update you on her progress. Positive thoughts and prayers are appreciated during this difficult time.
