Hi everyone, my name is Abel. I am 11 years old. When I was a baby, at 6 months old, I had open-heart surgery (VSD - Ventricular Septal Defect) for heart murmurs and was doing great. But on April 26, 2025, I was told at Driscoll Hospital in Corpus Christi, TX, that my heart was very sick and that they would be flying me to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, TX, on the 27th of April.

So far, I’ve been placed on all different kinds of medicine for my heart; recently being told I need a new heart (transplant). I’ve passed all tests and am a good candidate. I don’t know when a heart will be available, but in the meantime, I will be placed on a pump to help my heart (HeartMate 3; LVAD). May 13th, I’ll have surgery for the pump.

Recovery will be 3-4 weeks after surgery. Thankfully, I have Medicaid and my medical bills will be covered.

My mom has started a GoFundMe because we need help getting our home ready for me to go home. Unfortunately, my dad had a stroke and has not been approved for disability, and my mom was laid off in December 2024. Our home needs repairs to make it safe for me to go home. Repairs to the shower so I am able to access it without hurting myself, several electrical issues including a new breaker box to make sure my medical equipment will work properly, and new flooring because it has steep stairs and isn’t safe.
