I began working towards earning my bachelors degree in sustainable business four years ago at the age of 39. Now, at 43 and with one year left until I graduate, I have been presented with the opportunity to spend the Fall 2015 semester abroad. It isn't just any opportunity, it is three months on a ship operated by Semester at Sea which will take me to nine countries, four continents and across the Atlantic ocean.
During this time I, and a few hundred other students, will be taking a full 12 credit course load on board the ship. Our classes will have field labs in the various countries we visit giving us the opportunity to have a truly global learning experience.
When I was a little girl my cousin and I used to talk often about how when we grew up we wanted to be world travelers. As I grew into adulthood and life began to do what life does this I set aside the idea of traveling the world. It became one of those many "one day..." things that we continue to hope will happen even as it seems to become less and less likely.
Today though, and in the past few weeks as scholarships and grants have come in, it seems as though this is a dream that might actually come true. The only things standing in my way at the moment is funding.
I've raised just over $18,500 and have $11,500 more dollars to raise by the beginning of June to cover my tuition and room & board. I will continue to apply for grants and scholarships but funds will also be needed to cover airfare, text books and other related fees. Many people have asked how they might assist me in meeting this goal and so I have set up this GoFundMe campaign.
Anyone who contributes will receive a personal thank you from me in the form of a post card from one of the destination countries as well as regular email updates on my journey next fall. I look forward to sharing this journey with you!
Any funds raised in excess of what is needed will be donated the the Semester at Sea scholarship fund to help other students in need.
Thank you for your kindness and support.
