On September 19th, my brother and former Marine, John, was admitted to the hospital with an initial suspected diagnosis of stroke. A week and endless tests later would reveal a rare Cryptococcus neoformans infection, also known as fungal Meningitis. Due to a suppressed immune system from steroid therapy, John was unable to fight off this fungus found in our everyday environment and has now been in ICU for more than a month as the infection attacks his brain. Prognosis for C. neoformans is not always positive, but John is a fighter and we are all here to fight with him.
His family and friends pray every day for a full recovery but know the road will be very long with many unknown steps. For over a month his wife, Melissa, has barely left his side. She sleeps in a hard chair next to his bed waiting for him to respond, to open his eyes, or squeeze her hand. Their two sons, Brodey (13) and Cooper (9), are being cared for by family who have stepped up to do anything and everything to help. As a whole, we have tried our best to keep life as normal for the boys as we possibly can. The hard reality is, medical bills are piling up, there is a mortgage to be paid, household bills to be paid, and we want to help take this burden off of Melissa's mind so she can focus on John and his recovery. The last thing John, Melissa and the boys need to worry about is how ends will meet. Their lives have already been turned upside down, but their family, friends and even the love of complete strangers can balance it back out.
We do not even know what the full goal is, but all money raised is going towards keeping their house, paying the utilities, and paying the medical bills which are a scary unknown mountain right now. We're not sure what insurance is covering - from more than 20 CT scans and MRIs to the $10K medication, the surgeries and the ICU stay. What we do know is we do not want John or Melissa to even think about that right now - we just want them to focus on John's healing and getting back home to his two boys. We ask for any help - every little bit adds up and we also ask for your prayers for John's recovery. For any miracle that will return this fun-loving and caring man back to his two boys and wife.
