My son John is a 26 year full time college student who unfortunately suffered a massive stroke while traveling with me out of state to support his little sister in her cheer competition.  We traveled to Atlanta, GA from Florida on last Friday and John suffered a stroke on that Sunday.  John's fall to the floor shortly after 4 am Sunday morning woke me to find him experiencing severe loss of function and coherence.  Once at the hospital I was told that John's stroke had affected a large portion of the left side of his brain leaving his entire right side paralyzed and it would be too dangerous for any type of intervention to halt the spread of the stroke so we would just have to wait and hope for the best.  A little later I was given a choice of a procedure that was considered very risky but better than doing nothing at that point; the neurologists treating John were very passionate about his case because of his young age.  John's surgery was successful but I was advised that a second surgery might be necessary because things would get worse before they begin to turn around.  As suspected, John's brain began to swell substantially and a large portion of his skull had to be removed.  Since the surgery, John has progressed  but now John requires an extended stay and intense treatment in an acute rehab facility to restore speech, cognitive, and mobility function.  Unfortunately his insurance company will not cover any expenses incurred out of state including acute care and therefore will not cover the mandatory medic flight from Grady Hospital to the rehab facility in Florida.  Without the follow-up acute care rehab, John will not regain  functions necessary to survive this tragic incident.  We are in desperate need of financial assistance to get John back home to Florida as his insurance will not cover any medical or rehabilitative services outside of the service area (FL).  John will be cleared for discharge to rehab within the next week and can hopefully be back in Florida with our family very soon with your help.  Any donation would be helpful in our efforts to secure a medic flight necessary to get John home.
