In December of 2019, I moved from Washington back to California to move in with my fiance at the time, and a roommate. The day I went to return the Uhaul truck, I stopped at a gas station to fill the tank, as was in the contract.
In pulling into the gas station, I swung too sharply, and the very corner of the trailer I had towed my car on scraped a lady's bumper, scratching the paint in a roughly 3 square inch area.. Thinking nothing of it, I exchanged information and continued on my way.
Two months later, I got a call from my insurance company, saying they had denied to cover the claim because the UHaul truck breached a little-used clause in my policy, in that is was too heavy to be covered. They said that the other party's insurance may come after me for restitution.
In March, I received a letter from the above, "Johnathan Neil and Associates," informing me that I owed the above stated 5400$, and that if I declined to pay within a week, I would have my licence suspended. Rightfully unnerved, I called and spoke with them, and was told that payment options were available.
I asked for an itemized list of what the costs I would be paying for were. Finding out that the other party had had an entire wheel and tire replaced on my dime, I emailed them, disputing that portion of the payment (equaling almost half of the damages, 2200$ for tire and wheel), and waited for a reply. This letter, received yesterday, was their reply.
I've been struggling with employment since the beginning of COVID, and this past Thursday, lost my second job in two months. The first was working as a stock clerk for Harbor Freight tools, due to poor attendance due to medical issues. The second was work cleaning up a CNC machine shop in San Jose. A more qualified individual had applied after I was hired, and was willing to take the same salary as I was, so I was let go. My final check went towards paying my car bill for this month.
I currently have no income, and with my license being suspended any day now, no way to get to work, even if I did have a job. Every dime of this fundraiser is going towards paying this off, and trying to get out from under this before they try to come and take my car, even though I won't be able to legally drive it.
I need your help, and it hurts to have to admit it, but my only other options are bankruptcy.
Please help me, and thank you for reading this far.
EDIT: On the advice of a close friend, I've increased the amount, because I forgot that GoFundMe does take a cut of the donations. (Approximately 3%, if I recall) This increase will make sure that I have enough to pay the debt in full, without falling short. Any excess beyond that will go to helping pay for food, groceries and any other necessities that I'll need until I can get my license reinstated.
