Johnny's Place

Johnny Murray was known and loved by the Mitchell community and visitors alike. He and his horse Minnie were iconic figures as they walked the streets of Mitchell, chatting, entertaining and enthralling all and sundry with Minnie's tricks and John's immense local knowledge.
Following his untimely death late in 2018 many people have expressed the view that the community should have some form of lasting memorial for this true Mitchell legend.
Booringa Action Group shares this sentiment and has been working with members of the community to make this dream a reality. We have now reached the point (with the co-operation and support of the Mitchell Bakery and FoodWorks Mitchell) where the vision can begin to become a reality in the following form;
- The area between the Mitchell Bakery and FoodWorks will be opened as public space and named 'Johnny's Place'.
- The rear wall of this space will incorporate a 3m x 2m lazer cut metal silhouette of Johnny leading Minnie with solar lighting behind the memorial to lighten him up of a night time.
- A new shade sail will be installed to provide the area with soft shade.
- New outdoor settings will replace the existing timber furniture to create a fresh new friendly look.
- A trolley bay will be installed for the convenience of FoodWorks customers.
- Entry to the space will be improved to ensure easy access for those with disabilities.
This area was chosen as it was one of Johnny and Minnie's favourite places to visit daily.
