As many of you know, in 2010, John Leavey was diagnosed with Cirrhosis of the Liver. At about the same time his doctors also found John was suffering from Hepatitis C. This is after having lived with HIV/AIDS for almost 30 years.
John was forced to leave his job because the Interferon treatment he had to undergo for the Hep C would not physically allow him to work. That treatment almost killed him and yet he repeated it, on his doctor’s recommendation, in 2012. Neither treatment worked and, in fact both times, it made him quite ill.
Then, in April of 2015, the Cirrhosis developed into liver cancer and in October of that same year, it started to spread - first to the remaining healthy part of his liver, then his stomach, then his chest, and then to his lymph nodes. Then, this past January, the cancer had spread to his bones: first his left clavicle and then to his sternum and then to his ribs, which he describes as unbelievably painful. It continues to spread as none of the chemotherapy treatments have had any impact.
John is truly a brave soul, a fighter and one of a kind. Everyone who knows John can surely attest to this. After all, he is a long-term survivor of HIV/AIDS stumping absolutely everyone. This July will be 30 years. 30 years.
Throughout this nightmare, John has been able to manage his medical expenses, but recently they have become overwhelming and he is hemorrhaging money. It's incredibly stressful for him.
We feel that the remainder of John’s time on this planet should be focused on staying as healthy as is possible, focusing on the things that bring him joy – most notably his friends and his beloved Bubba, instead of worrying about money.
In the time he has left remaining, he will continue to try every option available to him. So many people have asked us how they can help. Well, now there is a way. Let’s help make John’s life easier. A little or a lot will be momentous for him. Thank you to all who love him. He treasures all of your friendships and positive thoughts.
