I would like to thank the family and friends who created this GoFundMe page in response to my Pancreatic Cancer diagnosis of November 2017, an effort that has yielded almost $20,000.00 to date. Since I have been a bit overwhelmed and preoccupied with my treatment, surgery and recovery process, I want to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to those who have made a contribution to assist me with my medical expenses. The good news is that, six-months out from my Whipple procedure at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, I remain cancer-free.
The bad news is Pancreatic Cancer is one of the few cancers for which survival has not improved substantially over the last forty years with only 9% of those diagnosed surviving more than five years. Having discovered my tumor at Stage Two when it was still operable and having undergone months of chemotherapy and radiation before and after my surgery have given me best odds to beat this thing.
Though I remain optimistic, I have regrettably been separated from my job after having taken an unpaid medical leave of absence for my surgery and recovery. Almost half of all cancer patients go bankrupt within the first year due to the high cost of care. I am doing my best to deal with out-of-pocket expenses but the process of staying current with our finances without an income or health insurance has been tough. This unexpected turn in my life has me scrambling to survive, to stay alive and to be part of that 9% who lives past five years. I'm praying for a miracle--I'm wanting to be that miracle.
Because I appreciate the overwhelming outpouring of love/support from friends and family wanting to know how they can help, I humbly swallow my pride and ask you personally to consider making an online contribution so my GoFundMe page so that I might meet my financial responsibilities/obligations while I seek gainful employment. My return pledge to you is that, when I am back on firmer-footing, I will pay these kindnesses forward to someone who is in the same position of “unexpected need” that I find myself in today.
