John Richards aka (Big John)

I'm setting up this GoFundMe in honour of my granddad, John Richards, known affectionately as Big John. He passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on March 10th, 2025.

John left behind a remarkable legacy. He was one of the early pioneers who came to the UK, not only to build a life for himself but to make a way for others. He opened his home to family arriving from Jamaica, helping them settle and build a future in England. He was a founding member of the Learie Constantine West Indian Association, always working to support and uplift the Black British community.

He has left his wife Maudlyn Richards and two grandsons, Kieron and Joel along with two great-grandsons, Billy and Rafa.

But beyond all of that, Big John opened his heart and his home to me and so many others. He adopted Simmone, Kamilah, and granddaughter Elizabeth, and his door at Leighton Gardens was always open. He never knew the word “no” when someone needed help.

To honour this kind and generous man, I would love to place a memorial bench at the back of Constantine Park a space where people can sit, reflect, and remember the love and legacy of Big John.
