John Porter's fight

Please help if you can! The Porter's need us!

John just completed his 1st week of radiation and has also started the trial drug. He is doing pretty good from what Karen has told me.  Please refrain from calling and checking in on them. I will keep this updated as I get more info to share. They need their time to fight and focus on getting John better! Any help is greatly appreciated by the Porter's family!!

From Karen 3/1/2019 when we first found out:

John has nasopharyngeal carcinoma, a cancerous tumor in his naval cavity that has spread to 2 lumphnodes in his neck. We were told it's not a common cancer (leave it up to John to not be "normal") and not usually found here in the US. However, it is treatable and curable so we have that going for us!

He will have 7 weeks of radiation M-F 5 days per week along with a strong dose of chemo during this time once every 3 weeks. Then after that possibly 2-3 more cylces of chemo. We are going to the Buffet Cancer center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. We are so lucky to have the best care for cancer here.

He is also participating in a new trial research program where they inject him with a drug that's supposed to help make the radiation not so harmful to the good cells in his head and neck. He said if it can help others and himself from having alot of discomfort he wants to do it.

The radiation will cause him to get blisters and such in his mouth so he may not be able to eat well. It will also dehydrate him. The chemo will make him nauseated and of course prone to infection. His goal during this time is to stay as healthy as possible by eating, staying hydrated and making sure he doesn't get  an infection. If he doesn't eat well and starts to loose alot of weight they may insert a temporary feeding tube. But I believe as long as he can have Goodrich malts and ice cream, it shouldn't be an issued! LOL!

Well, we have to spend a good amount of time at the hospital, especially the days he has chemo & radiation as it's an all day deal. I will work when I can and they are working with me at my job. , however I am out of vacation time and will not be getting paid from any time I miss.

What I ask of all of you is that you pray, pray, pray for us....my kids are going through this as well as myself so please keep us all in your prayers if you can. We never thought this would be something that would hit us personally, and we know many that it has.

John is doing pretty good dealing with all of this as he is still him comical self! And he has new nurses and doctors to tell his old jokes to!
