John O'Groats to Land's end cycle
Hi everyone, my name is George Allen and i'm about to undertake the challenge of cycling from the North of Scotland (John O'Groats) to the South of England (Land's End) with my friend Joseph. The journey is about 1000 miles and we expect it to take around 14 days.
We initially started this challenge as a product of sheer ambition and boredom, and it's pretty rapidly escalated to a time-consuming hobby involving intense training and a lot of hours on the bike. We'll be starting the ride around the 2nd August and aim to make it home by the 16th, which should be more than achievable if we stick to our usual speed.
I've also been in contact with the Marine Biological Association who are based in Plymouth, and i'm delighted to say that I'll be raising money for their cause through this GoFundMe page. The MBA are a registered charity and organisation based in Plymouth, who play a huge role in the development of research and education in regards to marine science. They run a number of schemes, such as educating young people about marine biology and providing funding to post-doctorate research scientists, amongst others. Their influence on me as I was beginning my path as a marine biology student was huge, and I believe the work they do is absolutely invaluable.
The planet is in a state of environmental crisis, the oceans face the highest levels of plastic pollution in history, forests are disappearing faster than ever and the effect it has on the inhabitants of earth (not only marine-based) is very largely being realised. However, education, research and awareness spearheaded by organisations such as the MBA are a huge factor in not only reversing the effects of the past, but preventing the damage in future. The money from this fundraiser will be hugely appreciated, and honestly, the planet needs all the help it can get. Finally, if you feel you really connected with this cause, give it a share and make sure to spread the word, everyone can change for the better, whether by reducing plastic consumption, eating less environmentally damaging foods, or just switching the light off.
Thank you so much for reading, any and all donations are helping a wonderful cause, if you've gotten this far you're fantastic.
George.
