The John J. Hightower Basketball Skills Academy (HBSA) is a locally based amateur athletic club focusing on basketball talent development, and assisting youth with matriculating in college and premier secondary education institutions. The organization was founded in 2016 by John J. Hightower, Esq. who is a 1999 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and 2004 graduate of Suffolk University Law School. Mr. Hightower is a former 3 year starter for the College of the Holy Cross Men's Basketball Team in the Patriot League Conference.
Some of attorney Hightower's athletic accomplishments include being and High-Honorable mention nominee to the McDonalds High School All-American game ('95), Boston Globe All-Scholastic ('95), Five-Star Camp All-Star (NBA Division) ('94), Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic (2x) ('94-'95), USA Today and Street and Smith's Magazine High-Honorable Mention All-American ('95), preseason Patriot League newcomer of the year ('95-'96), and preseason All-Patriot League ('99).
Mr. Hightower personally trains and mentors all team members seeking to grow themselves academically, athletically, and personally as young men utilizing his first-hand experiences and life lessons.
Some past HBSA accomplishments include winning the Providence Junior Jamfest and several local, Boston-area tournaments. HBSA regularly travels throughout the United States to compete in youth basketball tournaments during the spring and summer months. In 2019, the organization raised money to assist with travelling to Indiana to participate in an international competition tournament sponsored by USA basketball placing 8th and also travelled to the Adidas Summer Championship located in Birmingham, AL where the team earned a 3rd place trophy out of 100's of participating teams. We are so grateful to the donors who assisted us with having a successful 2019 summer trip.
The program's flagship 2022 unit currently participates on the coveted, national Prep Hoops Circuit and will travel to Texas, PA, NJ, and AL this summer to compete along with select 2023 HBSA program members. Some key current HBSA members on the 2022 roster include Cushing Academy 2023 Marvin Musiime-Kamali (ranked 12th in New England by Prep Hoops), Tyler Victor (recently committed to Quincy College), Jonathan Inozil, and Julio Goodridge-Fernandes who has been contacted by BC, VCU, and Liberty University in the past regarding his athletic talents.
HBSA is currently seeking funding to assist with its planned summer trips as part of the NCAA July Live Period designed to further enhance the skill development of its players and to place them in front of Division 1 basketball coaches again for recruitment where they will have the chance to earn college scholarships.
