In November 2018, a week after his 39th birthday, John Hawk was diagnosed with Stage 4 Grade 4 kidney cancer. Upon diagnosis, John had to have his left kidney removed and reconstructive spine surgery.  He is currently undergoing radiation treatments for his cancer. John has been working as a warehouse manager at Silgan Containers in St. Joseph Missouri, but his current medical condition will not enable him to continue working at this time. John is the primary breadwinner for his family  - wife Valerie, sons Owen (15) and Haddon (12), and daughter Sunshine (11). His medical bills have exceeded $600,000 and his insurance company is being difficult regarding the payments and authorizations for the necessary radiation treatments that John desperately needs.
