It is with great sadness that we share the passing of an amazing Oregon Swimming Official, John Haring, from an illness he had battled for some time.
John served as a Referee, blowing the whistle at meets all over the state including High School Championships and OSI Championship meets. Swimmers often felt at home on the starting blocks wherever they swam because John was there blowing the whistle and ensuring that all athletes were treated with respect and fairness.
John was also a leader in the community of Oregon swimming officials, training and mentoring many, if not most, of the officials you see serving at swim meets throughout the region. He volunteered his time tirelessly to not only be the best official he could be, but in working with others to make sure they became great officials as well. To John it was about serving others.
As John led one of his last officials' meetings, besides sharing his wry humor, he also shared what he believed was the purpose of serving as a swim official. He said, "We are here to ensure that all swimmers experience fairness, integrity, and safety while they compete and grow as swimmers and as people. No other reason."
Funds collected here will go directly to his wife and children to help cover costs associated with John's memorial service and other final expenses.
