Let’s Help John Goodwin!

For those who haven't heard, John is battling a debilitating brain disease called Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA), a neurological syndrome in which his language capabilities are slowly but progressively deteriorating. Soon, according to his doctors, John will lose all ability to not only express any type of outward communication, but will also not be able to understand any inward communication. Unfortunately, this will include sign language and written language.

Unlike other forms of aphasia that result from stroke or brain injury, PPA is caused by neurodegenerative diseases, which in John’s case is Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease. There is no cure.

Tragically, this affliction hit John in his peak income producing years and has forced his wife Stephanie to become his caregiver. While John is still young at 56 years old, he can no longer work and is most comfortable in the secure surroundings of his home, where he and Stephanie raised their family. His doctors have advised him to live in familiar surroundings, as this will provide comfort as the Alzheimer’s disease progresses. Their home in Yorba Linda is where they hope to stay as long as they can, even as John’s health declines.

Thankfully, John is, at heart, the same happy, fun-loving kindhearted generous guy we’ve long known. In his yard he recently planted 3 raised garden beds with tomatoes, eggplant, cantaloupe and more.  He is enjoying the routine of morning walks in the neighborhood, tending to his garden and spending time with Stephanie and their children.

Throughout his career in retail real estate spent primarily with Kimco Realty Corporation, The Walton Group of Companies and GMS Realty, John impacted so many of us with his keen industry knowledge and strong relationships. He has always supported the retail real estate community by being an active member of ICSC, achieving multiple ICSC designations and volunteering his time for ICSC educational events. Anyone that dealt with John walked away knowing that they were treated fairly and with respect.  John still has his sense of humor and he welcomes your jokes, laughter and love.

John and Stephanie need help from all of us to stay in their home as long as possible, continue with speech therapy, plan for future medical needs and prepare for whatever will come next.  John is a proud person and agreeing to let us tell his former colleagues and friends about his battle was not easy for him. Unfortunately, the road ahead only gets more challenging.

Our hope is that we will meet this goal together to provide John the help and reassurance he needs to manage his condition with dignity by covering about 4 years of recurring living and medical expenses.  Every contribution will help, so please consider giving what you can.

God bless and thank you!

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is believed by some to slow the progression of Alzheimer's Disease.  This therapy is not covered by insurance.
The constant love and support of Stephanie and John's family helps keep his spirits high.  She calls him her "hero".
Keeping an amazing attitude as more tests were performed to try and confirm diagnosis.
A spinal tap was necessary and painful.  John took it in stride.
For their 31st wedding anniversary John gave Stephanie a replica of the lifesaver ring they had at their wedding that had gone missing many years ago.
