Family of a U.S. Marine Needs Help with Cremation Expense
Sergeant John “Duke” DuMong a Marine Corps Veteran died on April 28, 2020 at the age of 82 because of cancer.
His wife Jean of 65 years along with their four sons, Ed, Frank, Dan, and Bill are requesting help with cremation costs.
They are attempting to raise $3500.00.
John had no life insurance and lived on social security (His $900 a month and his wife Jean $600).
The four sons are currently unemployed due to the Corona Virus and are struggling to keep their own families a float. Jeans Social Security will be reduced.
The funds raised will go to cover the cost of the cremation. Any funds raised beyond their goal will go to cover the cost of a modest memorial service, once group gatherings are approved. His ashes will be scattered at a place he loved dearly Morro Rock, Morro Bay, CA.
Why is John “Duke” DuMong deserving of this help. Although he was not a rich man, he was extremely rich in heart and would help others in any way he could.
This short story will help you understand just how thoughtful this great man and Marine and his wife were.
Over twenty years ago, Duke learned of a small-town San Ardo, located 18 miles south of King City, California whose children needed a little help during Christmas Season.
John “Duke” met with the School Administrators at San Ardo Elementary School and decided to hold an annual Christmas celebration for the young Children.
John “Duke’ then was able to get toys donated from the San Bruno Marine Corps Reserve, Toys for Tots Program. He along with two fellow Marine Veterans would take the toys to San Ardo Elementary School for a Christmas celebration for the next 19 years. Each child from Grade K to 6th would receive at least two toys from Santa Claus. John’s wife Jean would bake cupcakes for all the Children making it a very special day. John “Duke” DuMong became known to the parents and teachers as the “Secret Santa”.
That program continues to live on today by Marines from the Marine Corps League, Monterey Bay Detachment 711 in honor of a great Marine Sergeant John “Duke” DuMong who saw a need and acted upon it.
As it is said in the third verse of the Marines Hymn, “If the Army and the Navy ever looked on heavens scenes, they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines.”
As Sergeant John “Duke” DuMong, USMC, reports to his final duty station, Heaven’s Gate, I’m sure he’s smiling upon us and sending everyone a ”Semper Fidelis”, Always Faithful to God Country and Corps.
The DuMong family would like to thank all those whose generosity will help to bring closure to the family and honor a great man and Marine with a kind and rich heart.
