John Barber (‘Barbs’) Fundraising Trust

Donation protected
John (or ‘Barbs’!) needs an electric powered wheelchair and we have set up this fundraising page to raise funds. John is quadriplegic since contracting Japanese Encephalitis mosquito borne virus whilst travelling in Laos and Thailand in 2015. At the moment, John has a manual wheelchair which is impossible for carers and family to manoeuvre and push round the Glossop hills! Unfortunately, John does not qualify for a power chair under the NHS, but desperately needs one. We have been told we need to find the funds ourselves which means we are fundraising!

Chair info
We have sourced the chair best suited to John with a local specialist company, an Ibis power-drive.  It is a super chair that his support workers and family can easily control and much better suited to Glossop area hilly terrain and for trips out. (This link shows the Ibis chair type except Johns controls will be at the back

John’s support workers and family really struggle to push his current heavy basic manual chair even up access ramps due to the weight of his chair and equipment that he needs to carry.

The power chair for John will make a fantastic difference to his life. It will:-

• get him in and out of his van much more quickly and easily
• manoeuvre so much better in the house
• enable access going up and down slopes and hills
• looks modern for a young man and a real quality fit for John
• has optional attachments and has every functionality covered - cruise control and all safety functions
• provides much better posture management than his current chair with adjustable domino seating
• and most importantly, give John a much better feeling of independence knowing he can glide around so much more easily

The full cost is £8,835 including all attachments. As John also does not qualify for NHS wheelchair budgets to contribute towards this cost, and as Johns only income is benefits, we are now needing to fundraise the full cost for John.

John’s Story
After being a keen footballer and sportsman until the age of 24 he contracted Japanese Encephalitis (a rare mosquito borne zoonotic virus) whilst travelling in Laos and Thailand in 2015. This affects the central nervous system - brain and spinal cord - and for John unfortunately caused him to be largely paralysed from the neck downwards due to spinal cord lesions from the virus (similar to polio). John was first in a coma and is now wheelchair bound, but actively gets out and about and keeps positive.

After many years in hospitals and care homes, John now lives at home in his adapted home annexe and is making the very best of his life. He is busy with his ongoing therapies, trips out in his van, and holidays. A power chair will mean that more spaces are accessible to John for him to visit and explore.

Any contribution you can make will be very gratefully received by John, and make a big difference to his enjoyment of his life and independence. And if John is lucky enough to have any excess funds, these will be used for extra therapy costs of Physio and Speech and Language to meet his challenge ‘Goals!’ going forward.

John is ever positive and a sport, and is determined to enjoy and improve his life.

Fundraising activities
In the summer months we will be organising fundraising events for John linked to this page to achieve his target. Every penny raised will be directly for John. We will update here with different events being carried out.
