The John B. Wellen Scholarship for Music and Leadership
“Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise. The gift of language combined with the gift of song was given to man that he should proclaim the Word of God through Music.” -Martin Luther
Mr. John B. Wellen taught eighth grade at St John’s Lutheran School from 1977 to 1997, serving as Music Director for both the church and school. Wherever Mr. Wellen went, he brought music with him, touching the lives of students and parishioners at St. John's on a daily basis. In addition to playing organ during services, he also directed the church choir and handbell groups. As part of his role with the school, he directed the Children's Choir and the St. John's Singers.
He always made time for individual instruction, teaching guitar and ORFF instruments during after school hours. His children attended St. John's School, and he was a devoted member of the community. No Oktoberfest or church picnic was complete without his accordion music playing in the background.
In honor of his 80th birthday, Mr. John B. Wellen's family has established a scholarship in his name as a part of the St. John’s Angel Scholarship Program. This generous gift will support one St. John's student with up to 25% of their tuition costs.
This music and leadership scholarship honors Mr. Wellen's 20 years of teaching and service to St. John’s Lutheran Church and School and it's Community by supporting his passion for a Christ-centered Education of a child.
We ask you to join us in this by considering a gift of any amount to the Wellen Music Scholarship. We also invite former students and friends and other community members to share any memories of John and his love of music you may have.
Thank you for your consideration and God Bless.
