Joey's Journey to Wellness

Our friend Joey Mihailoff and his wonderful family (Dad - Tom, Mom - Amanda, Big Brother - T.J.) are embarking on a journey guided by faith and science. On August 26, 2021, Joey was off to his first day of kindergarten. Before the school day was over, he had been sent home for not feeling well. Shortly after, he had earned a trip to the Emergency Department with some concerning symptoms. The very next day, Joey underwent a 7 hour brain surgery for tumor biopsy and removal. Joey has since been diagnosed with Medulloblastoma (a form of brain cancer). While most of the tumor has been removed and his prognosis is promising, the Mihailoff family still has a challenging road ahead. Tom and Amanda will have to divide and conquer the responsibilities of maintaining a sense of normalcy for their older son at home, while being strong, caring and tireless for Joey in another city. Joey will soon undergo 6 weeks of proton therapy (a form radiation therapy) in the Cincinnati area, which is around 5 hours away from home. The Mihailoffs are currently on a waitlist for family centric housing and are exploring all of their options with guidance from Joey's care team. Following the completion of the proton therapy and sufficient recovery and inpatient rehabilitation, Joey will also be receiving 4 rounds of inpatient chemotherapy. Fortunately, the chemotherapy is available closer to home.
