Hi, my name is Joey. I really need the support of the community to get back on my feet and start over.

Help Reclaim My Life After a Medical Emergency Was Mistaken for a DUI

On June 30th, 2025, I was on my way to a job interview when I had a medical issue. I became disoriented, my vision blurred, and I lost control of my arms and legs. I rear-ended a truck at a stoplight — going about 10 mph.

Even though I hadn’t been drinking, I was arrested for DUI. I couldn’t speak clearly or explain what was happening. I told officers I thought I was having a heart attack. They ran tests at the hospital but waited to draw my blood when they got me to the jail. (I have since been sent a letter stating that there was nothing in my blood like I told them.)

Despite this medical emergency, I was taken to jail and kept in solitary confinement for 30 days. I had no access to my phone or any way to contact friends or family.

When I was finally released on July 30th, I came home to find that my cat — my only companion — had stopped eating shortly after I disappeared. Friends did their best to save her, but she passed away in my arms in the early hours of August 2nd.

I have now lost everything. My car, my apartment of 10 years, and most importantly, my cat Nola.

I have since been helped by a friend who gave me a van I can make payments on, but it needs work before it's really safe to drive. I have been staying in the van, shelters, and couch surfing while I look for a job and a permanent place to live. I need help to cover the basic costs of starting over. Anything you can give is deeply appreciated — thank you for taking the time to read and support.
