Assistance to Joey's family while he undergoes DBS surgery

Hi, my name is Char. I created this fundraiser for Julie and Joey.
Joey is a determined 16-year-old Grade 11 student at Bishop James Mahoney High School. When Joey was just 5 years old, his health began to deteriorate, and he lost most of his fine motor skills. Simple everyday tasks like holding a spoon or pencil became very difficult. He had to relearn many of these basic skills and continues to work hard every day to maintain independence and live a productive lifestyle. Joey lives by his motto, “Never Give Up,” inspired by his favorite WWE wrestler, John Cena.
In the beginning, Joey underwent countless medical appointments to rule out serious conditions such as brain tumors, seizures, and other illnesses. The sudden onset of symptoms was frightening, and after nearly three years of ongoing tests and specialist visits, Joey was diagnosed with a form of Early On-set Parkinson’s Disorder and Dystonia. Unlike in adults, the illness has affected Joey’s developing brain before his body, making his journey especially challenging.
After exhausting every possible treatment and test in Saskatchewan, Joey was referred to a medical team in Toronto. With their care and expertise, Joey has experienced improvements in his overall health and quality of life. At his most recent specialist appointment this spring, it was decided that Joey would undergo Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery on October 23, 2025 (out of province).

DBS is a medical procedure where small electrodes are placed in specific areas of the brain. These electrodes are connected to a device, similar to a pacemaker, that sends mild electrical signals to help regulate abnormal brain activity. For people with movement disorders like Parkinson’s and Dystonia, DBS can reduce symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, help with pain and difficulty with motor control, helping them live with greater independence.
Today, Joey continues with weekly occupational and speech therapy, monthly physiotherapy, regular blood work, and frequent doctor visits. Despite the challenges, he remains active and hopeful. He participates in Special Olympics basketball, competitive swimming, powerlifting and baseball. He is also a devoted WWE fan.
Joey’s journey is far from over, but with the support of his medical team, therapies, family, and community, he continues to face each step with strength and determination.
Please help him and Julie as they will be out of province for approximately one month or longer.
