Hello! I am proud to say that my hero, my mama, our Joey is FINALLY retiring after 40 YEARS!!!
1976, the year of Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford, Apple Computer beginnings, The Muppet Show, Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life and the Bicentennial-an epic year for an epic woman to begin her career as a teacher.
I can personally say, as impactful as all of my teachers have been on my life, I cannot remember all-but I do remember my first (Hello, Janice). I’m sure as many of you reflect on those early years, your first teacher comes to mind. We can always remember their names, the look of their classroom, the excitement, the care and love….ahhh…Kindergarten.
(As many of you are teachers, you’ll appreciate some math …)
My mother’s average class size was around 20 students, over the course of 40 years that’s 800 students! (worth mentioning that’s 800 sets of parents too).
Could you imagine being 800 people’s kindergarten teacher? The magnitude of it… How many of us can say that we’ve impacted 800 people, let alone teach them?
As my mother prepares for the “long summer”…I’d ask us, as a collective of friends, family and colleagues to send this teacher of 40 years off with a bang.
Help me raise funds to send my mama, our Joey, your Ms. Watkins, on the trip of a lifetime. Now, mums the word, I’d like for this to be a surprise…we’ll let her decide her adventure once we achieve our goal; whether that’s Ireland, the beaches of Hawaii, playing in Europe… We have until the end of the school year…that’ll be June.
Many thanks to all of you!
Cheers,
Patterson Watkins
