In September 2022, a group of guys united by a common cause, will be walking non-stop from the University of Leicester to West Ham United, a journey of roughly 103 miles that we aim to do in one (long) go!

Our friend, Joe Martin, has multiple sclerosis. MS is an incurable, highly debilitating condition caused by the immune system attacking the brain and nerves.

 

Joe's life has changed dramatically over the last few years. Once a keen footballer (but still a massive West Ham fan) and gym-goer, Joe now uses a wheelchair and suffers from significant mobility issues, making even the little things in life like making a cup of tea, extremely difficult.

Though Joe will always have MS, he is determined to get back to doing the things he used to do. With support from his parents, he has bought a bungalow and is moving in soon. However, significant adjustments are needed, including:

- reconfiguring the driveway and path to the front door to make it wheelchair friendly;

- building an accessible outdoor office so Joe can work from home;

- reconfiguring the kitchen to lower the units so they can be easily accessed in a wheelchair;

- changing the flooring to make it accessible for a wheelchair and using leftover money to make his home look fantastic.

 

So this band of amateurs, dad-bods and first-time explorers who know Joe from school, the University of Leicester (his alma mater) and other walks of life, will be embarking on this blister-inducing 40+ hour walk to raise as much money as possible to help transform Joe’s life.

We can’t cure his MS, but we can sure as hell reduce its burden.
