Joe's Journey to USPSA Nationals: Your Help Needed
Donation protected
Hi, this is me… Joe, 54 years old, with Muscular Dystrophy in my power soccer wheelchair.
It has been my dream since I started to play power soccer 13 years ago to achieve this medal (pictured above) and to advance to the top level of competition at the USPSA National Conference Championships in Indiana https://uspowersoccer.sportngin.com, 2025.
I love the sport… The nonprofit BSHC (Boston Self Help Center) https://bostonselfhelpcenter.org has created this opportunity for me and a lot of other players/teams over these last 13 years. I have been a proud member of the Boston Brakers power soccer team for over 13 years. I have assisted in planning tournaments, designing uniforms, creating logos, and helping fundraise.
Let me break down what’s involved, and some costs associated for someone like me to compete in the 4-day USPSA Conference in Indiana. First, I need a specific power wheelchair (pictured above at personal expense). For me to get to and play a game, especially in a tournament, involves not just competing at a high level but a number of other things. I need a personal care attendant for helping me in and out of bed and the shower and getting me dressed. I also need them to drive the accessible vehicle to the National tournament since I do not fly. The fundraising is for the accessible van rental ($1,800), paying a driver ($200) for the 2-day trip from Boston to Ft. Wayne, Indiana, hotel/motel cost for 6 nights $1,300 (1 night each way $120), and food ($100). The BSHC (Boston Self Help Center) and their all-volunteer staff organize and fund (entry fee) $500.
The cost for this journey to Indiana to realize my dream… approximately $4,500. It could be as much as $5,000 if there are unexpected emergencies.
