Joe's Fight For Time

Joe is my childhood friend of 53 years. He is a father and a new grandfather. He is a beloved son and brother. He is also fighting cancer with everything he's got. Today he needs help with a new step in his cancer journey.

First, here is a little history:

On January 10th, 2018, Joey was taken to the hospital with a fractured sternum and 6 broken ribs. 10 days later they did a bone marrow biopsy. He learned he had multiple myeloma.

In July 2018 he had a stem cell transplant, but by November 2019 the cancer was back. After about 7 months in treatment at Emory in Atlanta, his numbers were trending up.

In November 2021 Joey's next step was the University of Arkansas myeloma center for 2 weeks for testing. There it was decided they just weren't a good fit for him, as their primary focus was stem cell transplants.

This brings us to today. A new form of therapy was approved last year called Car-t therapy. After three months of testing and collecting, Joey has been approved for this therapy.

This means he will be in Birmingham for 7 weeks. For those 7 weeks, Joey will be in both in-patient and outpatient care but will have to remain close to the hospital. To do this he will need to arrange lodging and a caregiver during the outpatient stays.

This GoFundme is to help Joe and his family with the cost of both lodging and the part-time caregiver, all of which will be out-of-pocket.
