Tin House Workshop

Hi family, hi friends, hi queer family, hi everyone,

I've got some good news and some bad.  The good, first : I was accepted into the prestigious Tin House writing workshop this summer in creative non-fiction. The even better : I was selected to be in a workshop lead by Kiese Laymon.  Kiese has been one of my favorite writers for years; we worked together briefy at Vassar and he has been a huge supporter of my writing.  We've never had the opportunity to sit and work together.  I've learned so much by reading his work, but I haven't had the time I want to sit and learn within in shared space.

Now, the bad : I was a finalist for a full scholarship, but wasn't ultimately selected.  I'm bummed (but I really hope the $$$ went to some dope POC writers).  Although my financial life has stabilized in the last few months (thanks to subsidized housing and support from a fellowship), I have a few years of being a poorly paid graduate student and post-doc in the most expensive city in the country to make up for.  I really can't go this alone.

I know that there are a million of these things, and I know that I am not more deserving of your dollars than any other cause (actually, I'm probably less deserving).  But I know my community and family supports and lifts me up when I need help.  I've never had formal training as a writer.  My experience at the Lambda Literary retreat with Randall Kenan broke me up and open.  Two years later, and with mentorship from one of my writing heros, I am ready to sit and focus for a week on this part of my work.  To focus on my writing.

The cost of the retreat / room / board is over $1800 and the rest of the money (if I reach that goal) will cover airfare to and from Portland, Oregon.

Any amount of help helps.  Thank you!
