"Suddenly yet not unexpectedly, we sadly announce the passing of our beautiful Joel. Left with deep heartbreak are his loving wife Nicole and their son James, as well as his beloved parents Jack and Theresa Vanderlaan. He will be dearly missed by his siblings Andrew (Kim) and Cobi (Mike) and will be sadly missed by nieces and nephews, Levi, Zoey, Luke and Talia. Will also be missed by in-laws Kathy and Barry O'Hara, Katie (Justin), and James (Christina). Greatly missed by many friends and extended family.
Special thanks to the Hamilton Police Department for their daily dedication in fighting the opioid crisis. Joel was a hardworking, family man who loved to spend time with his son. He enjoyed the outdoors and had many passions."
