Created July 15, 2019
Joel is a junior at Rosemount High School, and part of a loving family, including an older sister and three younger brothers, as well as countless hockey brothers, both from RAHA and from Rosemount High School Hockey, where he lettered as a sophomore in the 2018/2019 hockey season.

On Sunday, July 14th, Joel was severely injured in a freak pool accident.  He broke two vertebrae, and is suffering from a spinal cord injury.  He underwent a six-hour surgery on Monday, July 15th, to stabilize the spine, which involved removing the C4 vertebrae and fusing C3 to C5.  At this time, Joel can move and feel his arms, and is beginning to have feeling in his legs.  The full ramifications of this event won't be known for a long time, but he will have a long road ahead no matter what the outcome, including an extensive hospital stay and intensive inpatient rehabilitation.

Many of you know this awesome family, and have been asking how you can help.  First and foremost, the family humbly asks for everyone to keep praying for Joel, for his family, and for his medical team.  In addition, the Rosemount hockey community is requesting donations for this family that works tirelessly in the community, at church and at the hockey rink.  Scott and MJ want everyone to know that the money raised will go toward Joel's recovery process.

Updates on Joel's progress will be posted here, as well as on the "Joel Carlson Updates" Facebook page, as soon as they become available.

Thank you in advance for your support, both financially and spiritually.

MJ's 8/21 Evening Update:

This afternoon made it a great day! If you didn't see the praise report, Joel moved his right ring finger and thumb earlier today! He was so excited! (so were we!) After seeing his ring finger move, he told me his thumb was moving earlier but he didn't say anything because he wasn't sure. Then he was able to move it a little later on and knew for sure. He could tell the difference with the thumb moving and when it spasmed.

If that wasn't enough, OT hooked him up to the hand bike pedal again this afternoon and he was able to do 100 reps forward and 50 reps back! That was a huge jump from yesterday when he maybe got 30 reps forward and a few reps back before his arms were completely tired out.

Then PT hooked him up to the e-stim bike (the one in the MN Wild video) and it worked his leg muscles for almost an hour.

We also enjoyed a 1/2 hour outside today. Something we don't normally do, but really enjoyed it between morning and afternoon therapy sessions.

Such a great afternoon! A big change from my morning where I was feeling completely overwhelmed with life and wondering how we were going to manage. I mentioned it to Scott for the two minutes we saw each other today, and he told me later that after he left, he prayed and asked God for a sign that we are going in the right direction and going to be okay. I have a feeling he asked to encourage Joel and me. God answered his prayers today!! Thank you, Lord!!

Stay bold in your prayers! They are being answered!! Thank you!! #joelstrong6 #theresalwayshope #beboldandpersevere!!

MJ's 8/21 Morning Update:

Good morning! I've been struggling with headaches the last couple of days, so I crashed last night before being able to send an update. Yesterday, OT hooked Joel's arms to the same machine that powered his legs the day before. It made his arms reach too far and hurt him though, so they had to take them off. That specific machine hooks him up to e-stim to help stimulate his muscles and brain connection, so hoping we can do some stretches for a few days and try again later in the week.

They decided to move him to a different hand pedal machine, and he was able to make that one go on his own working his biceps and triceps. They have these gloves they put on his hands that velcro to the handles to keep his hands in place since he still doesn't have finger movement. I was happy and amazed at how much he could push with just his arms.

Joel has been asking how much longer until he can come home, and yesterday the Dr. unofficially said around the end of October. It all depends on his improvement. He was not happy with that answer, and I was bothered a bit because it was right before afternoon therapy and I knew he wouldn't be in a good mood. But, Scott mentioned he was happy he heard it because he's hoping it'll fire Joel up to work even harder. Once I saw that perspective, I agree with Scott. We understand that part of the recovery is completely out of Joel's control, but the part that is in his control, he can decide to push himself above the line set for him and not just to the line (sound familiar, Coach Saintey?). Most of the time he does do that, though, so please don't think we're pushing him harder than he can handle. We just know he has more in him than he knows at the moment.

Thanks to the MN Wild, who posted a video of Joel's situation and progress on their website! It turned out great, Brandon (the cameraman and video designer)!

Stay bold in your prayers for perseverance and tenacity for Joel. Pray that he finds an inner strength he never knew he had through this, and pray for his complete healing in mind, body and soul!! Thank you!! #joelstrong6 #theresalwayshope #beboldandpersevere!!

MJ's 8/19 Evening Update #2:

Today was a great day! Joel, our family, Coach Saintey and Alex and Kacie (two of the three who saved Joel that night) were able to visit with a few NHL players: Zach Parise, Ryan Carter and Lee Goren. What amazing men these guys are! So down to earth and genuine! It was great hearing how hockey has influenced their lives positively, and listening to them talk hockey just like they were all a bunch of friends hanging out. We are completely humbled they took time out of their busy schedules to stop down!

After the party was broken up because of Joel's therapy schedule, Joel was able to be on the bike machine to start working his legs. They hooked him up with e-stim and went to town! It was nice to see his muscles contracting while the machine was rotating his legs around. Praying they (his legs) start doing more on their own soon!

All the excitement today has exhausted me. Time for bed. Stay bold in your prayers! We believe they will all be answered! #joelstrong6 #theresalwayshope #beboldandpersevere!!
