Joe-n-Joann....... Ins. Ultimatum

Donation protected
My name is David Pitman Jr. and Im a project mgr.  for Moriarty Roofing in Colorado Springs , CO.
About a month ago I was introduced to one of the sweetest couples Ive ever met .
Joseph Morrow Sr. and his wife  Joann.
 Both in their 80's.
Joe is a retired electronics repair technician. His health is poor and he walks with a cane because of a disease that makes his feet and legs go numb, he falls sometimes and has several injuries that never healed right.
His wife, Joann, has to be one of the cutest little ladies Ive ever seen. She says she's 4'9". Im not so sure, but she's tiny, thats a fact. but luckily she still gets around pretty good.
At the request of their children, they moved to Colorado Springs in the early 2000s from Arizona, bought a house and settled into retirement.
If you know anything about the mountains on The Front Range, you know that the weather can get extreme at times.....And it happens suddenly.
Well, in the spring of 2012 there was a voilent storm that produced some large hail and ( unknown to them) it caused quite a bit of damage to their home.
But, being from Arizona, they knew nothing about these types of storms or the money that it would cost to repair such damage. They never knew that they needed to have the house inspected or file a claim with their insurance company. There were no leaks at the time , so the storm was soon forgotten and life moved on.
Fastforward to 2015.
Now,  well into their 80s, living on social security, with failing health, doctor bills, medications etc.. money began to get tight and in an effort to save a little, they switched their Homeowners Insurance to a cheaper company.....
You can see it coming, right !!!    Yep.

So, how did I get into the picture ?
Well, Joe and Joann are blessed to have a good neighbor watching out for them, Mike is his name. Mike knew the owner of Moriarty Roofing, Sean Moriarty, and I was sent out to do a property inspection. ( I specialize in Insurance related restoration).
What I found was not good.....hail impact marks all over the roof,  paint damage to the trim and siding etc..
But my job is to help in these situations. No problem, right, I've done this a thousand times.
So I asked Joe and Joann to contact their agent and file a claim....a few days later the adjuster shows up and we begin our inspection together.
Then I discover that the policy is less than one year old, but damage occured in 2012. So there was no coverage for the damage.
Heres where it gets sticky.....follow me.
When filing a claim, if you find damage that occured while the property was insured with a previous insurance carrier, you can file a claim on the previous insurance company, BUT, laws are different from state to state. In some states there are laws that regulate this, but in Colorado there are no laws at all concerning this matter. SO, its left up to the individual insurance companies to write this into their policies......Well, Joe and Joann's previous carrier has a 2 year limit. So no dice...... The damage occured 3+ years ago.

Oh, did I forget to mention what set this whole thing into motion ? Ehem !!   The insurance company that signed them up just a few months ago
( the new insurance company) sent them a letter saying that they were " non-renewing" or cancelling  the policy as of March 14, 2016 unless they get their roof replaced:
Why?  you might ask ... "age and deterioration" of the roof ....What a kick in the pants.!!!!!

They've paid premiums for decades, both insurance companies are legally "off the hook" and Joe and Joann are about to be cancelled ....unless they cough up $5000......which they dont have.
Heres what they DO have though...

A Mortgage
A broke arm that didnt heal right ( Joe fell on the ice )
A hernia ( complete with brace )
A deteriorated lower spine ( another brace )
Ump-teen monthly prescriptions
Upcoming eye surgery
Diseased legs
A Dodge mini-van from the 1980s
A cancelled Insurance policy
The list goes on and on!

Ive never seen anything like this....EVER !

I asked Joe and Joann for permission to ask the kind people at GoFundMe for help.
They need one more thing.... a new roof......OR ELSE!
I will do my part, Im asking you to Please donate.

Thank You
David
