Joe's Emergency Medical Fund

On behalf of Joe Sperlak, a dear friend and young Physical Therapist, I am trying to raise money to assist him during his battle to recover from multiple surgeries and subsequent infections.

I first met Joe while he was doing a rotation here in South Carolina while working on his degree in Physical Therapy. Despite being a student, I was impressed by his level of expertise, knowledge, compassion, and professionalism. I was able to work with him for several months and had a remarkable recovery from my knee pain during that time. 


Joe then graduated with his Doctorate of Physical Therapy and spent the first half of 2020 preparing and studying for his exams to obtain his license.  He had a full time job lined up working in Sports Medicine that didn't work out because of the pandemic, but he was able to adapt and found a few PRN jobs and a part time position at a small clinic in Greenville.  After working only a couple weeks as a new therapist, he was injured working out when he completely tore a muscle in his chest requiring surgery. As a young professional starting out, he wasn't eligible for insurance or disability.

After a lot of searching and planning Joe was able to find a local MD able to perform the surgery at a surgical center. A week into recovery, the problems began when he had bad complications causing the need for an additional emergency surgery to try and clean and remove an infection. The second surgery was performed adding nearly $30,000 in new medical expenses. 


Joe will continue to be out of work while using a wound vac and his timeline to return to work is not known at this time. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I know he would also appreciate any thoughts and prayers as he navigates all of this without health insurance and without qualifying for any assistance through his work. I'm trying to raise money to assist him in his growing medical expenses as well as help cover his day to day expenses.
