my name is haley im the step daughter of joel o’brian i am trying to raise funds to support my mum sue and the family of Joel O’Brien, who unexpectedly passed away on 10 March 2026.

Joel spent the final week of his life in hospital after complications from an infection led to an abscess on his heart. During that time, he was placed in an induced coma, but sadly he did not recover. His passing has left an enormous hole in the lives of everyone who knew him.

Joel was a much-loved member of the community and a loyal friend to many. The outpouring of support since his passing shows just how many people’s lives he touched. He was the kind of person who was always there for others — generous with his time, patient, and quietly supportive.

For many years Joel had not been in employment because he was devoted to caring for his wife, Sue, who has her own ongoing health challenges. Caring for her was something he took on with love and dedication every single day.

In 2019, when Sue’s children lost their father, Joel stepped into the role of dad without hesitation. He embraced the family fully and became a proud grandfather figure to their children, raising them as his own. Some of the most special moments he shared with them were teaching them his favourite hobbies — whether it was showing them how to crack a cattleman’s whip or playing video games and simply enjoying each other’s company.

Joel’s loss is deeply felt by Sue, their children, grandchildren, friends, and the wider community. During this incredibly difficult time, we are hoping to raise funds to help ease the financial pressure on Sue and the family — covering immediate expenses and providing some stability as they navigate life without Joel.
