Joe (Johara) Miyahara's Recovery Ride
Donation protected
Our dear friend, Joe Miyahara, was involved in an life threatening accident while riding his Harley with friends on Sunday, October 6, 2019. Witnesses said it appeared he lost control of the bike, swerved to the side of the road, and was thrown from the bike into a tree. His friend and passersby stopped to assist and he was airlifted to a nearby trauma center. He was admitted to the ICU and the prognosis was he would survive his injuries, albeit after a long recovery period. While the initial CAT scan and MRI indicated his brain and spinal cord were not harmed, he sustained multiple injuries otherwise; collapsed lungs, a broken clavicle on the left side, several broken ribs as well as some broken back bones, a fractured hip on the right side, and a broken femur on his right leg. Despite being heavily sedated he showed signs of being conscience and coherent. He was placed on a ventilator with two chest tubes to assist with breathing while the injuries to his broken ribs and back were healing. He remained in this state for the next few weeks while his pulmonary injuries began to heal.
On October 14, 2019 Joe underwent surgery to repair his fractured hip and broken femur. Complications during the procedure led Joe to experience a spinal stoke which left him paralyzed. Now recovery means not only rehabilitation in a post-care facility from the injuries sustained during the accident, but also learning how to manage day-to-day life as a paraplegic. Joe's recovery ride has been extended to at least a year. During this time renovations to the house, home health care, and modifications in transportation will be required. The uncertainty of Joe's return to gainful employment means the cost of these accommodations along with the looming hospital bills leaves the family with an ever growing financial burden.
Joe understands accidents are not uncommon and he is humbled by the outpouring of love and support he has received from family and friends. He thinks in his case, the compassion and support is unique. He feels very lucky and fortunate for everyone and all they have provided for him and his family.
