help us move house (Joe, Ibi, and the Kids)
Donation protected
Hi everyone,
My name is Joe, and I am reaching out with a heavy heart to ask for your help during an incredibly difficult time. My family and I have just been warned that we are going to be evicted from our home, and we are in need of assistance to help us move and secure a new place to live.
Unfortunately, our landlady decided to evict us unexpectedly, leaving us with little time or resources to find a new home and handle the costs of moving. As you can imagine, this has created a lot of stress, uncertainty, and financial strain for us, and we are now facing the daunting challenge of getting everything packed and finding a new place that we can afford within distance of our kids' schools.
We are both precarious workers. Ibi is an academic who undertakes seasonal teaching work, and I'm in the process of bootstrapping a business and therefore earning less than £1000 pcm. We were both already struggling, taking on odd jobs to make ends meet, and now our unamicable breakup with the landlady means she is likely to find any reason possible to withhold our deposit.
I've had a bad relationship the landlady since I moved here in 2019 following a breakup. She has been persistently cheap and innatentive - leaving us without a working boiler for a month last year, and no light in the bathroom for months before that. When she does see fit to visit and inspect she tends to be incredibly demeaning and humliating in her criticisms of or housekeeping and tidiness, often complaining about minor damage which predates our time in the property. On her most recent visit we got into a heated argument which I was unable to de-escalate (owing in part to my autism).
Unfortunately most of the issues we've had with the property are a case of "my word against hers" so I am unlikely to be able to protect our £1000 deposit. This means after paying a deposit on a new place, getting help with moving, and losing the current deposit, we'll be down be a few thousand.
We are asking for your support to help cover the costs of:
-Moving expenses: Hiring movers, renting a truck, packing materials, etc.
-Security deposit and first month's rent for a new place to live.
-Other immediate living expenses such as utility setup fees and transportation costs.
Any amount, no matter how small, will make a huge difference to us as we navigate this difficult situation. Your generosity will help us get back on our feet and create a safe and stable home for our family.
It feels gross to ask people for financial support in a time of rising fascism and war. I wouldn't be writing something like this if we didn't really need it.
If you’re unable to donate, simply sharing this campaign with others would mean the world to us. Thank you so much for your support during this challenging time—we are so grateful for any help you can offer.
With gratitude,
Joe & Ibi
