My mother spent the vast majority of her life within a few miles of where she was born—and she poured that life into the Moniteau School District and its students. Over a 35-year career, she touched hundreds—likely thousands—of young lives. She championed Academic Decathlon and helped students earn scholarships and confidence they didn’t know they had. And while she worked with high achievers, she was equally known for connecting with the kids who were still finding their way—the students who needed structure, encouragement, and someone who wouldn’t give up on them. She was kind and loving… and yes, fiery at times. But her loyalty and her heart for students never changed. Even in retirement she continued serving the district as a school board member, because she believed the work mattered.
In her memory, our family wants to create something lasting: the Joann Duke Memorial Scholarship, a scholarship for Moniteau graduating seniors that reflects her values—hard work, resilience, and potential. Funds raised will be used to establish and sustain the scholarship (including the initial award amount and any costs involved in setting it up/administering it through an appropriate scholarship account, foundation, or school-approved process).
If you knew my mom, worked with her, learned from her, or simply believe in investing in young people, we would be grateful for your support. Thank you for helping us carry her legacy forward.
